The trailer for our film, #TRANSITION which is available for pre-buy on Apple TV in the US. Please help us spread the word. If we pre-sell 250 copies of the film (it’s cheap), our film will land on the homepage of Apple TV when the film goes live on March 26th.  We are in a corporate age of #documentary film and streamers aren’t programming edgy indy films anymore, they prefer commercial feeling celebrity and true crime docs. If we get lots of pre-buys, collectively we’ll be sticking it to the man and showing streamers audiences do want to watch edgy indy films! If the film does well in the US other countries will want to stream it too. Thank you! First premiered at @tribeca , here is what some critics said about the film: NEW YORK TIMES / Kyle Turner “Crafted with a sense of immediacy, and placing the state of geopolitics and gender in conversation with one another, “Transition” is A CAPTIVATING DOCUMENT OF IDENTITY — national and personal — in flux.” INDIEWIRE / Jude Dry “AN ASTONISHING DOCUMENTARY. UNSENTIMENTAL AND SHARPLY RESTRAINED. Not only is access is paramount, but human stories are more nuanced than mainstream media can fathom. Amazingly, the film never sags under the weight of its dire surroundings. That seems almost entirely thanks to Bryon’s good-natured humor and lucid self-reflection. The film makes plain the experience of being caught between a rock and a hard place, a boldly incisive metaphor for the trans experience.” THE PLAYLIST / Christian Gallichio “A STAGGERING WORK. ONE OF THE MOST ENGROSSING DOCUMENTARIES OF THE YEAR. A riveting portrait of gender transitioning that successfully marries personal & political storytelling. Transition works as both a personal accounting of Bryon’s journey and a fascinating exploration of how gender is treated within conservative societies.” #Afghanistan #TRANSITION #Taliban #Kabul #Tehran #Afghanistan #Iran #Australia

Climate impacts revisited 📸 Rising Waters: Pakistan's Battle Against Climate Chaos by @kianahayeri "In the harrowing scenes emerging from the 2022 floods in Pakistan, I witnessed a poignant and distressing portrait of the climate crisis at its most destructive. These photographs capture more than just the immediate devastation of submerged homes, displaced families, and shattered communities; they are a stark visualization of a world grappling with the escalating impacts of climate change. The unusually intense monsoon rains, a direct consequence of a warming atmosphere, transformed rivers and streams into relentless torrents, overwhelming cities and rural areas alike. The accelerated melting of glaciers, fuelled by rising global temperatures, further swelled the floodwaters, illustrating the interconnected nature of climate impacts. These scenes also highlight the compounded vulnerabilities faced by regions like Pakistan, where rapid urbanization, deforestation, and insufficient infrastructure amplify the disaster's scale. The earlier heatwaves and droughts, precursors to the floods, underscore the complex, erratic patterns of climate-related events. Coastal regions, depicted in some images with encroaching floodwaters, remind us of the insidious rise in sea levels, another facet of the ongoing crisis. Each frame in my images tells a story of loss and resilience, serving as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to address the climate emergency. They reflect a reality where extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe, disproportionately affecting those least equipped to cope. As the waters eventually recede, the resilience of the Pakistani people stands as a testament to human endurance, but also as a plea for global action against the accelerating climate crisis." 📷 captions in comments👇 #climatejustice #climatecrisis #flooding #photoseries #climatephotography

Marriage is a costly affair in deeply impoverished Afghanistan, traditionally involving huge dowries, expensive gifts, and lavish parties. A national NGO organizes a mass wedding for a dozen couples in a humble wedding hall in western Kabul. "This year, the @womenphotograph Year in Pictures takes us around the world with work from 100 members of our community. For this sixth edition of our annual photographic review, it once again feels like a year defined by conflict and strife, from the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquake in February to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, to Hamas’ attack on Israel and the continuing Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Everywhere, it seems, we see evidence of continuing threats to human rights for women, LGBTQ+ people, and people of color in particular. But there are still moments of love and human connection even in the most grim circumstances. We hope that you’ll spend some time with this edit from photographer, editor, curator, and community organizer @veronicasanchis and, as you look back over 2023, connect with a lesser-known story or learn something new about a major news event." #Kabul #Afghanistan #yearinpictures

I've sat around hundreds of Afghan sufras with people from all walks of life and all socioeconomic backgrounds. Afghan #hospitality is known for its warmth, generosity, and deep-rooted cultural traditions. Guests are treated with the utmost respect, and hospitality is considered a sacred duty, for better and for worse. Upon entering an Afghan home, you are welcomed with open arms, often greeted with fragrant cups of chai sabz (green tea) and an array of traditional Afghan delicacies: dried mulberries, almonds, roasted chickpeas. The emphasis on hospitality transcends socioeconomic boundaries, reflecting Afghanistan's rich tapestry of customs and shared values. Afghans take pride in making guests feel at home, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and connection.  Whether in urban centers or remote villages, the spirit of Afghan hospitality remains a cherished aspect of daily life, showcasing the resilience and kindness of a people whose history is woven with stories of triumph and unity. Here is a small selection of some of the most memorable spreads I have been invited to sit around. This month, on December 14th and 15th, I will try to reenact some of that love and hospitality that I have experienced while living in Afghanistan and bring a group of storytellers, dreamers, debaters, and lovers together around a dinner table in #London at @caffegenco Join us for a night of nuanced discussion and storytelling. We have two very special guests each night and I will serve a selection of homemade hearty dishes inspired by Afghan cuisine—a four-course vegetarian menu perfect for a winter evening. Wine will be served. All the money raised from our upcoming events will go back to #Afghanistan to support artisans and women’s networks through @artijaan.co

As a photographer, I've spent a lot of time in kitchens. In Afghanistan and the Middle East, kitchens are always a great space to have uninterrupted access to the women of a household without the supervision of men. It's fun to shoot in kitchens because the feast of action, fire, and steam makes beautiful photographs. I've shot in all kinds of kitchens—kitchens set up in showers, on balconies, inside tents, in backyards, in mountains, and even a carwash. I learned that kitchens aren't defined by the typical physical elements that we're used to, but rather by the actions and interactions going on inside them. Kitchens are also a core part of my personal life. They are where I combine creativity, science, and mindfulness. Those who know me in person also know of my love for bringing people together over food. Over the years, I've hosted people from all walks of life around dinner tables and sufras, while cooking in makeshift kitchens where I get to be a nerdy artist and improvise a dish with very few ingredients available. The truth is, there's a Persian mama that lives within me that loves feeding people. There's so much joy and pleasure in watching your guests make connections, have hearty debates, solve the world's problems (which gets easier with every bottle of wine), and build friendships—all around a dinner table you set. I am stoked to announce that I'm opening up my kitchen to a broader community. Over the next few months, in collaboration with @artijaan.co and local spaces, we're setting up pop-up events around #Europe to bring storytellers, dreamers, debaters, and lovers together around a dinner table. Every event will have two very special guests who will share their stories. Our first two pop-up dinners are scheduled for mid-December in #London , and they're both centered around #Afghanistan (details will follow). I will serve a selection of homemade hearty dishes inspired by Afghan cuisine—a four-course vegetarian menu perfect for a winter evening. Wine will be served. All the money raised from our upcoming events will go back to Afghanistan to support artisans and women’s networks through Artijaan. New beginnings.  #london #england #supperclub

The three of us... These days, the 'cloud' pings me with memories with you as if Big Brother knows this season in Canada is defined by your presence; the fallen leaves, the strolls in the woods, the upside down cake. I am home and you're not, just residue of memories we made together. As baba and I are packing up the house, preparing him to embark on a new chapter, I am hanging on to little things; everything that tells me you were here before. I miss you #mom #aurora #canada

"A rainbow was formed as the clouds were pushed back by the gusty winds. She flew through the rainbow." On August 15th, 2021, the day the Taliban fighters marched into Kabul, Nazira turned 16. Instead of celebrating her sweet 16, she walked to the airport alone and magically ended up on the inside. She borrowed a phone from a stranger and called her dad to let them know what had happened. Her dad, holding back tears, told her to go ahead, "may god be with you, my daughter..." Two years later, paired with a foster family in a small town in southern Virginia, Nazira is finding herself and who she wants to be in America. On odd weekends, she tags along with her foster mom, Lydia, and sets up a face painting booth for kids in farmer's markets and seasonal flea markets. She's gentle with her touch, precise with her brush strokes and determined about her future. From my latest work shot on @natgeo explorer grant supported by @insidenatgeo There will be a sneak preview of this work during my presentation for Lucy Molnar Wing Lecture Series this week at @tmuimagearts in #Toronto #Canada If you're in town, come say hello. I'll be on campus from 6 pm and onwards. @torontomet #promiseswrittenontheiceleftinthesun #Afghanistan #USA

Last night, I spent hours staring into nothingness, in the vicinity of my carry-on and opened drawers. For weeks, heavy, dark clouds have hung above my head. Nailed to our screen, we have watched in disbelief how in Gaza a massacre is unfolding in broad daylight.  The obscenity & shamelessness of those in power justifying the dropped bombs is indigestible. The scale of death, destruction, and loss is just incomprehensible. The lack of empathy & sense of responsibility among some journalists is appalling. Last night, the clouds felt heavier than on other days. I was too young to remember anything from the invasion of Afghanistan, but what I know is that invading lands and bombing ordinary people is the perfect recipe for extremist ideology to return; bigger and stronger. I documented it two decades later. What's happening in Gaza has hit me hard. The death of Armita Gravand, a 17-year-old Iranian girl who just wanted to be herself, has hit me hard. The mass deportation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan back to that hellhole has hit me hard. As I sat on the bed staring into nothingness, I caught myself whispering Sarah Kay's poem; like a mother reading it to her daughter: "And she’s going to learn that this life will hit you, hard, in the face, wait for you to get back up, just so it can kick you in the stomach but getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air. There is hurt, fear that cannot be fixed by band aids or poetry so the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn’t coming I’ll make sure she knows she does not have to wear the cape all by herself because no matter how wide you stretch your fingers, your hands will always be too small to catch all the pain you want to heal. Believe me, I’ve tried." I packed my carry-on and had a few hours of sleep. I woke up to heavy black clouds hanging above my head again; literally and metaphorically speaking. As I boarded my plane, the 11th one in 8 weeks, the gusty wind shook the air bridge vigorously. I looked out and watched a rainbow forming as the clouds were pushed back by the wind. Our plane took off. We flew through the rainbow 🌈
