The springbok or springbuck (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in south and southwest Africa.
The springbok is the national animal of South Africa. All indications are that historic springbok numbers were the greatest (close to a billion) of all antelope ever roaming the globe. Since the mid 1990's the springbok was reintroduced widely to private land and protected areas throughout its former range. The largest numbers occur on private game farms, mainly in the highveld of the Free State and Gauteng provinces and the Karoo and Kalahari thornveld of the Western and Northern Cape provinces. The most southern natural distributions recorded was at Van Rhynsdorp in the Western Cape, and at Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape.
Springbok did not occur in the Sahel or in central East Africa where the ecological niches were filled by species of smaller gazelle. The springbok is thus truly endemic to southern Africa!
