When Los Angeles was plunged into a budget crisis earlier this year, progressive activists demanded that the City Council slash spending at the Police Department, saying it’s wrong to boost funding for officers while cutting other urgently needed services. Now, Mayor Garcetti has said his administration will look for $250 million in cuts from city departments, including the LAPD, and steer the funds to invest in job programs, health initiatives and other services supporting the black community and other communities of color. As part of those reductions, the LAPD will see cuts of $100 million to $150 million, he said.

Why cut funds? It seems counterproductive. Funds should go to trainings, screening future employees, meetings with psychologists...things to help the issues. If you cut funds all you’re going to do is make it so the salaries of police officers are so low that no one wants to do the job anymore.

It's not just the LAPD. Firefighters in Los Angeles are also abusing overtime. Your average firefighter can make well over 300K in overtime. It's ridiculous and should stop. We all want to feel safe from fire and other dangers but the use of overtime needs to be regulated, especially if not needed.
